Background of the Study
Immunization is one of the most effective public health strategies for preventing infectious diseases and reducing child mortality rates. In Nigeria, the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) aims to provide routine vaccinations to children and adults to prevent common vaccine-preventable diseases. In Niger State, immunization programs have been central to improving public health outcomes, yet challenges such as low vaccination coverage, misinformation, and logistical barriers persist (Ali et al., 2024). Nurses play an essential role in the implementation of immunization programs by administering vaccines, educating communities, and ensuring follow-up services.
Despite the critical role of nurses in immunization, there is a lack of detailed studies on their specific contributions to these programs in Niger State. Nurses are responsible not only for administering vaccines but also for promoting immunization awareness, addressing parental concerns, and managing adverse reactions. This study seeks to appraise the contribution of nurses to immunization programs in Niger State, examining their roles, challenges, and strategies for improving immunization coverage.
Statement of the Problem
In Niger State, despite efforts to improve immunization coverage, immunization rates remain suboptimal due to various factors, including misinformation, logistical challenges, and resistance to vaccination. Nurses, who are directly involved in the administration of vaccines, play a pivotal role in overcoming these barriers. However, their contributions to immunization programs are not well-documented, and their involvement in overcoming the challenges is not fully understood. This study seeks to evaluate the extent of nurses' contribution to immunization efforts in the state and identify strategies to enhance their impact.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the role of nurses in the implementation of immunization programs in Niger State.
2. To identify the challenges faced by nurses in the execution of immunization programs.
3. To recommend strategies to enhance the contribution of nurses in improving immunization coverage in Niger State.
Research Questions
1. What roles do nurses play in the implementation of immunization programs in Niger State?
2. What challenges do nurses face in delivering immunization services?
3. What strategies can be implemented to improve the role of nurses in immunization programs?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nurses in Niger State play a significant role in the success of immunization programs.
2. Misinformation, logistical challenges, and community resistance hinder nurses' effectiveness in immunization programs.
3. Improving training, community outreach, and logistical support will enhance nurses' contributions to immunization programs.
